MIDWAY, Ky. - Though it was perhaps bumpier than desired, the Midway women's volleyball team was able to stage an impressive comeback on senior day, reverse sweeping Brescia 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-12.
Undeterred by their early losses, the Eagles came out on fire in the third an fourth sets, scoring the first four points in set three and the first three in set four, in which they eventually took a 15-6 lead.
Things followed a similar script in the fifth set, as the Eagles again led 4-0, aided by an Aubry Koester kill and back-to-back- Marinna Liedle service aces.
This time, the Bearcats would make things interesting. After a Francisca Sousa kill, back-to-back Midway errors saw its lead dwindle all the way down to 12-11.
But Koester again took over, getting a kill and ace on back-to-back plays. Following a Brescia point, Nyla Gaines recorded the decisive kill to end the marathon match.
Though not her final home match, senior day was a fitting tribute to Koester. The three-time, First-Team All-River States Conferee selectee finished with 20 kills and 20 digs.
Fellow senior Anju Sugiya led all players with six service aces, one more than Brescia had as a team.
Liedle had 25 assists while Lindsey Whitehouse added 23 for Midway, which is now 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the RSC.
The Eagles will play their third Friday-Saturday home doubleheader in a row next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. match against St. Mary of the Woods Friday.
