Women's volleyball loses to SMWC as first-set comeback not enough

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway made its biggest single-set comeback of the season, but was unable to build on it, losing 25-27, 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 to St. Mary of the Woods in a River States Conference women's volleyball match Friday.

The Pomeroys entered the night with a record of 24-3. Only Cumberlands (Ky.) and Aquinas (Mich.) had more wins in all the NAIA, both teams having 27.

But riding the momentum of a reverse-sweep win over Brescia last Saturday, the Eagles were still in comeback mode in the opening set, making a furious charge after falling behind 19-12.

Down 23-20, Midway got kills by Alyssa MedeirosAubry Koester and Meghan Adams on three consecutive points to tie the score at 23.

Adams then made another great play to break a 24-24 tie. Defending against SMWC's Isabel Hansen, a leaping Adams batted the ball to herself, then pushed it to an open spot in the back of the court, giving Midway its first lead since it was 2-1.

The Pomeroys tied it back up off a Midway error, but followed it up with consecutive errors of their own to secure a comeback win for the Eagles.

The seven-point deficit is the biggest overcome by the Eagles this season. The previous best was when they came back from 14-8 down to defeat Trinity Christian (Ill.) on Aug. 30.

Sadly, the momentum wouldn't last, as the end of the first set would be the final time Midway would lead.

Marinna Liedle recorded 10 assists in the opening set and concluded the night with 30, her most in an Eagle uniform. Koester tied for a match-high 15 kills while Anju Sugiya and Blair Riney tied for a match-high 12 digs for Midway, which is now 9-9 overall with a 4-5 mark in the RSC.

An even greater challenge awaits the Eagles Saturday, as they will host Indiana Kokomo, the No. 11-ranked team in the NAIA. The Cougars come in having won 37-consecutive matches against RSC teams and have lost just two sets in River States play this season.

The match at Marshall Gymnasium will begin at noon.
