MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway had inspired moments against No. 11, nationally-ranked Indiana Kokomo Saturday, but the Cougars had too much firepower, sweeping the Eagles 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 at Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles forced a 13-13 tie in the opening set and kept it within 22-20 following an Aubry Koester kill, only for IUK to close things out with three kills by three different players.
Midway had a .357 to .275 edge in hitting percentage in the opening set, but the Cougars held a big advantage in attacks, recording 40 (with 16 kills) to the Eagles' 28 (14).
Despite a negative hitting percentage, the Eagles were once again tied late in the second set, scoring five straight points to force a tie at 17.
But the Cougars came out hot off a timeout. Mya Grigsby assisted on an Alexis Baney kill, then recorded a service ace, as IUK held a multi-point advantage the rest of the set.
That momentum carried over into set three, with Kokomo scoring the first six points.
Including the conference tournament, the Cougars have won 37-consecutive games against River States teams and have lost just two sets in 10 conference matches this season.
Koester and Meghan Adams, who both hit .675 or better in the opening set, led Midway with 10 and eight kills respectively. Marinna Liedle had 15 assists and Blair Riney 15 digs for the Eagles, who are 9-10 overall with a 4-5 conference record.
Midway takes a break for RSC games on Tuesday, hosting Boyce at 7 p.m.
