MIDWAY, Ky. - River States Conference leading Rio Grande took immediate control and never let it up, topping Midway 8-0 in a men's soccer matchup Thursday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Eagles held a senior day celebration in honor of 10 soon-to-be-departing players. Those taking part were Bryson Lynch, Joseph Gonzalez, Jared Bastin, Henry Alvor, Anthony Weber, Jimmy Daugherty, Jacob Pollak, Aaron Hornak, Owen Clements and Florene Twahirwa.
The Red Storm scoring began just 3 minutes, 8 seconds into the game, when Pedfro Izaias recorded a goal on a penalty kick.
All told, Rio's eight goals were scored by eight different players. The defense was excellent too, holding Midway to just three shots, including none in the second half.
Now 4-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the RSC, Midway, which entered the day in the No. 6 position, has a favorable remaining schedule as it looks to secure one of the spots in the River States Conference Tournament.
The Eagles' final three conference games are against St. Mary of the Woods, Shawnee State and Indiana East, teams who entered Thursday with just two combined wins
All three games will be on the road, starting with a 4:30 p.m. matchup against St. Mary of the Woods in Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday.
