MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway held a plus-20 shot advantage and survived a wild, late-game sequence to earn a 2-0 women's soccer win over visiting Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on senior day Saturday.
Prior to the game, the Eagles sent off a massive class, as Cameron Banfield, Jaden Barker, Julia Carruth, Evie Clare, Madison Harper, Morgan Harper, Holly Johnstone, Anna Kessinger, Lyla Khanthachack, Madison Land, Leanna Peterzell, Hannah Riggs, Maggie Sauer, Mollie Spillman and Caylee Thompson all took part in senior day festivities.
The group then helped to contribute to an effort that was dominant everywhere but the scoreboard. The Eagles outshot the Lions 29-9, including a 21-3 edge in the second half, but with two minutes remaining, led just 1-0, thanks to a Haylee Applegate goal off a Khanthachack assist in the 34th minute.
Things then got chaotic with two minutes to go. Gabriela Albrecht made a good move around the Eagle defense for an open shot. Eagle keeper Thompson deflected it, but the ball got past her and rolled towards an open net.
Luckily, Thompson's contact slowed the ball down enough for Johnstone to come in and kick it away before it could roll into the goal.
Immediately after, the Eagles moved the ball down field where a double-teamed Applegate made great moves to shed both defenders, then fired off her 12th shot of the afternoon, which resulted in her second goal.
Midway is now 6-8-2 on the year. Still clinging to life in their attempts to get a spot in the River States Conference Tournament, the Eagles have two RSC games left on the schedule, starting with a 5:30 p.m. game at Shawnee State (Ohio) on Wednesday.
