PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Maggie Sauer and Evie Clare connected for two second-half goals and the Midway women's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive with a thrilling, come-from-behind 2-1 win over River States Conference foe Shawnee State Wednesday.
The Bears, who held a 17-10 shot advantage, took the lead in the 69th minute on a goal my Mekenzie Loper, before Sauer found Clare for an answer 8 minutes, 50 seconds later.
Then, with just 1:54 left on the clock, the senior duo connected again, with Sauer finding Clare, who kicked home her RSC-leading 13th goal of the season.
A big reason the Eagles were in position for the late winner was the play of freshman goalie Ellis Kerns, who finished the night with 10 saves.
Now 2-4-2 in River States Conference play. Though still needing help to make the six-team field, Midway was able to stay mathematically alive for a spot in the RSC Tournament.
The Eagles will conclude the regular season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. road matchup against Indiana East.
