MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway gave a spirited effort defensively, but a good Oakland City team took advantage of a pair of second-half opportunities, defeating the Eagles 2-0 in a River States men's soccer game Thursday.
Keeper Connor Vincent and a defensive unit led by Jacob Pollak and Blake Warner were able to combat an aggressive Mighty Oak offense well into the second half, as the teams remained locked in a scoreless tie.
But things changed on a corner kick in the 58th minute, as a loose ball wound up at the feet of OCU's leading scorer Marcos Pappas, who found an opening on the left side of the net and fired a shot by a diving Vincent.
Willem Hulsebosch then added an insurance goal in the 77th minute, and OCU rode a defense that allowed just five shots to a 2-0 win and a 2-0 conference record.
Vincent, who entered the day with an RSC-high 47 saves added seven more to his tally, as Midway fell to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Eagles will play their first River States road game Saturday, as they will take on Indiana Columbus at 7 p.m.
