Offense regains firepower, women's soccer routs IUC for first conference win

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Three Midway players scored two goals and the Eagle offense got back on track in a dominant 8-2 win over Indiana Columbus in women's soccer Saturday.

It was the first River States Conference win of the season for the Eagles, who are 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league games.

Both teams came out on fire, combining for three goals in the first 5 minutes, 27 seconds. After the Crimson Pride struck first, Midway responded when Cameron Banfield scored unassisted in the fifth minute before assisting on an Anna Kneisley goal 40 seconds later.

Lyla Khanthachack scored unassisted to make it 3-1 in the 26th minute, before Kneisley answered a Columbus goal with one of her own in the 36th to give Midway a 4-2 lead at the half.

The rest was all Midway. Khanthachack scored again nine minutes into the second half before Evie Clare proceeded to score twice in successionis the 57th and 61st minutes.

It was another standout performance from Clare, who entered the day with a River States-best eight goals.

Morgan Harper then capped the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute.

Saturday was another milestone moment for an Eagle offense, which rebounded nicely from a 5-0 loss to Oakland City Thursday.

After scoring 16 goals in a shutout over Alice Lloyd Tuesday, the most scored by an Eagle team since at least 2008, Midway equaled its biggest scoring output in a conference game in that same timeframe.

The Eagles also scored eight times in a pair of games against Brescia, one in 2016, the other in 2018.

Midway is back home for their next three games, staring with a 3 p.m. Thursday matchup against two-time defending RSC Champion Indiana Kokomo.
