KOKOMO, Ind. - Midway put up a good fight, but the eighth-seeded Eagles ultimately saw their season end at the hands of top-seeded Indiana Kokomo by the final of 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 in the quarterfinals of the River States Conference women's volleyball tournament Tuesday.
Against a Cougar team that entered the night 11th in the NAIA national rankings, the Eagles held leads in each of the first two sets and pulled even at 17 in the opener following an
Aubry Koester service ace. But IUK responded with a 5-0 run, the first three points coming off of kills by Cali Cummings.
The Eagles then put together a great rally in set two. After falling behind 17-10, they got all the way within 24-23 on a
Kylie Kohrs ace, only for the Cougars to get a clinching kill by Mya Grigsby on the following point.
Though it never led in set three, Midway again kept things tight with a pair of strong runs. The Eagles scored four points in a row to tie the set at seven, then had a 3-0 run to pull even at 15, the last two points coming off of Koester kills.
Koester,
who earned All-River States First Team honors for the fourth time earlier in the day, had a team-high 15 kills, while also making 10 digs and three blocks in her final match as an Eagle. She finishes her college career with 1,347 kills and 733 digs.
But after calling a time out, IUK quickly broke the 15-15 tie by scoring five unanswered points, eventually securing its 44th-consecutive win against a River States opponent.
Fellow seniors
Marinna Liedle (15 assists) and
Emily Slaughter (seven kills) also had strong outings in their final collegiate games, while
Blair Riney closed out her all-conference freshman season with 13 digs.
Midway finishes 2024 with a record of 11-18.
