WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Midway went head-to-head with the No. 8 team in the country well into the second half, but the University of the Cumberlands pulled away with a 27-10 run to close the third quarter, eventually earning a 92-84 win in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday.
The game was highly competitive for the first 23 minutes, 12 seconds of game time, in which the lead changed hands 17 times with nine ties.
The Eagles, who never trailed by more than two points in that span, took their last lead three minutes into the third quarter, when an
A'Lyrica Hughes layup put them ahead 48-46.
But the Patriot offense would catch fire from there. After Leaeanna McNulty tied the game with two free throws, a 3-pointer by Kaylie Monday and jumper by Kassie Monday on consecutive possessions gave Cumberlands the lead for good.
The Patriots would quickly follow that up with a 6-of-7 shooting stretch from the field, as they would hold a 29-15 scoring edge for the quarter. Though unable to make up the difference, the Eagles responded by outscoring UC 26-19 in the fourth period.
Midway was once again led by
A'Lyrica Hughes and
Jermyra Christian, who led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points each. Christian scored 10 points in the first quarter, while Hughes pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
Kassidy Daugherty scored a season-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Jenna Phelps and
Atlantis White made big contributions off the bench, with Phelps setting career-highs with 13 points and four assists and White scoring 11 points for the 3-3 Eagles.
Midway will be in Ohio for two road games next week, starting with a 6 p.m. matchup with Cincinnati-Clermont on Tuesday.
