BATAVIA, Ohio – Midway University women's basketball pulled away in the second half to secure an 87-72 win over Cincinnati Clermont in action on Tuesday night.
The Eagles were led by Kassidy Daugherty, who scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Jacie Chesser posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jermyra Christian added 11 points. Midway shot 45.5 percent from the field and made 10-of-33 from three-point range.
Cincinnati Clermont (2-5) was powered by Trya Murphy, who finished with 35 points and eight rebounds. Olivia Crawford added 18 points, and Bryanna Price chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. Despite shooting 42.9% from the field, the Cougars couldn't keep up with Midway, especially in the second and third quarters when the Eagles outscored them 46-38.
First Quarter:
Midway came out strong in the opening period, outscoring the Cougars 23-14. The Eagles hit 9-of-21 field goals, including three 3-pointers, while Clermont struggled with their shooting, making only 5-of-11 shots from the floor. Despite shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc, the Cougars were unable to match Midway's offensive pace.
Second Quarter:
Clermont fought back in the second quarter, outscoring Midway 20-17. The Cougars found some rhythm, with Murphy scoring 10 of her 35 points in the period, but Midway maintained control. Chesser's strong rebounding and scoring seven points kept the Eagles ahead, as Midway took a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter:
Midway surged in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 69-50 with a 26-19 advantage. The Eagles capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities, while Daugherty hit two more 3-pointers. Clermont struggled with its shooting from long range, hitting only 1-of-6 from 3-point land, and couldn't close the gap.
Fourth Quarter:
Cincinnati Clermont made a late push in the final quarter, outscoring Midway 22-18. Murphy continued her strong play, adding 11 points in the period, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held firm. Midway controlled the pace, and despite a perfect 8-of-8 free throw performance from Clermont, the Eagles finished strong to secure the 87-72 victory.
Midway dominated in points off turnovers (30-15) and held a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint. The Eagles also outpaced the Cougars in bench scoring, 38-4.
The win improves Midway's record to 4-3. The Eagles play their next game on the road in Defiance, Ohio on November 30.
