Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball explodes to dominant win at Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio - A slow start turned into the most productive offensive day the Midway women's basketball has had in nearly three years on Saturday.

The Eagles put together a 21-1 run in a second-quarter that saw them hold a 40-10 scoring edge, as Midway pulled away for a 107-70 road win against Defiance (Ohio).

The 107 points are the most the Eagles have scored since a 109-38 win over Carlow on Jan. 27, 2022.

A winless Yellow Jacket team actually held a lead at the end of the first quarter was was ahead 22-18 less than a minute into the second before a Jermyra Christian free throw began a Midway avalanche that lasted the next 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

In that time, the Eagles shot 9-of-11 from the field while Defiance shot 0-for-5 and turned the ball over five times.

As has been the case in all five of its wins this season, Midway was able to turn pressure defense into scoring on the other end. The Eagles forced 28 turnovers Saturday, which resulted in 40 points.

The Eagles were again able to rely on a balanced attack led by backcourt duo Christian and A'Lyrica Hughes. Christian led all players with 20 points while also recording six rebounds, while Hughes had 14 points with a game-high nine rebounds and six assists.

Midway also held a 61-28 edge in bench scoring, with veterans and newcomers sharing the workload.

Senior Atlantis White scored 16 points while freshmen Kiera Couch and Taryn Morris both had career-highs with 14 and 11 respectively.

Couch got her points while shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field while Morris got hers in just nine minutes.

Now 5-3 on the season, the Eagles will play their next five games at home, where they are 3-0 this season, winning by an average of 32.6 points per-game.

That streak will be challenged in a big way of Wednesday, when 11th-ranked Georgetown (6-1) comes to Marshall Gymnasium for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
