Grace hands Eagles WBB first loss of season

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace (Ind.) scored the final seven points of the first quarter and held control the rest of the way, sending the Midway women's basketball team to its first loss of the season, 93-63, in the first game of the Val Weinstein Classic Friday night.

Ahead just 14-13 at the time, the Lancers' scored all seven points of their first quarter run at the foul line. Free throw discrepancy was a major factor all night, with Grace going 34-of-41 at the line, while Midway was just 11-of-19.

Grace then held a 30-15 scoring advantage in the second quarter as it pushed its lead to 25 in the third. The Eagles attempted to rally, getting within 63-51 thanks to a 10-0 run in the third quarter, but the Lancers answered by outscoring Midway 30-12 the rest of the game.

Jacie Chesser led Midway with 17 points, while A'Lyrica Hughes and Jermyra Christian both stuffed the stat sheet.

Hughes finished with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double and, just days after being named River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week, recorded three more steals. While held to just seven points, Christian had 11 rebounds and four steals while leading all players with eight assists.

Trinity Johnson also chipped in 12 points for 2-1 Midway, which will face Spring Arbor (Mich.) on the second day of the Val Weinstein Classic on Saturday at noon.
