WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Five players scoring in double figures wasn't enough to get the Midway women's basketball team over the hump, as the Eagles lost to Spring Harbor (Mich.) 85-80 on the final day of the Val Weinstein Classic on Saturday.
The Midway defense had no answer for Cougar center Alana Nelson. A Second-Team All-American last season, Nelson had 40 points and 18 rebounds Saturday, shooting 15-of-26 from the field with three 3-pointers while making all seven of her free throw attempts.
Despite the loss, the Eagles once again got great performances out of
Jermyra Christian and
A'Lyrica Hughes. Christian had 23 points and five steals, while Hughes netted 19 points with seven rebounds and six assists.
Hughes, a freshman, has opened her college career with four-consecutive double-digit scoring efforts. She's also recorded six assists twice and averaged 10 rebounds
in the two games at the Weinstein Classic.
Kassidy Daugherty,
Jacie Chesser and
Atlantis White also scored in double-figures, with each player netting 10 points.
Now 2-2 on the season, Midway is off for 10 days before returning home to face Miami-Middletown (Ohio) on Nov. 19.
