RIO GRANDE, Ohio. - The Midway women's volleyball team was unable to build on the momentum of a great first set, losing 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-5 to Rio Grande in the second-to-last match of the regular season.
Against a Red Storm team that entered the night 13-2 in conference play, the Eagles came out aggressive, building up an early 14-5 lead and keeping Rio at arm's length the entire set.
That would be the highlight of the evening, though, as the Red Storm didn't trail in the second set, then after Midway pulled ahead 7-5 on an
Aubry Koester kill, scored the next five points to take control of the third.
That gave way to a dominant third set, in which Rio scored the first 11 points and out-hit the Eagles.583 to negative-.071.
Koester had 13 kills, 13 digs and three aces to lead Midway, while
Marinna Liedle recorded 26 assists.
Still looking to lock down a spot in the RSC Tournament, the Eagles, who are 11-16 overall and 6-8 in conference play, close the regular season at Indiana University East Saturday at 2 p.m.
