Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball starts fast, holds off Campbellsville for road win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Midway jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead and withstood a second-half Campbellsville rally to earn an 85-76 in-state, non-conference men's basketball win Friday afternoon.

Friday was Midway's first road win of the season and its first victory away from Marshall Gymnasium in eight games, dating back to last season.

The quick start was led by preseason All-River States Conference selection Jalen Cincore, who looks to be rounding into form following a 27-point effort in his second game back from a preseason injury.

Cincore, who had 10 points in 26 minutes in his return to action against Rio Grande on Wednesday, scored 12 in the first 6:22 of game action against the Tigers, capping that stretch with a 3-pointer that put the Eagles ahead 21-15.

In addition to his scoring, Cincore, who shot 10-of-15 from the field, also had six rebounds and tied Robbie Henry for the team lead with three steals.

The lead would continue to expand and reached its peak at the first-half buzzer, when Travontae Swift hit a 3-pointer to put Midway ahead 47-32 at halftime.

The Eagles wouldn't surrender the lead in the second half, but Campbellsville certainly made them sweat things out.

Henry hit a layup to put Midway up 71-59 with 8:12 to play, but the Tigers responded with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes, getting within 74-73 after a pair of Jay Milburn free throws with just over three minutes remaining.

But Midway responded with an Amari Wales layup of the following possession. Then, after the teams traded stops, Decoreio Smith hit arguably the biggest shot of the game, drilling a 3-pointer with just 1:47 to go. Up 79-73, Midway was able to finish the Tigers off at the foul line.

Long-distance shots proved to be the biggest difference, with the Eagles hitting 9-of-18 3-point attempts while the Tigers were just 4-for-20.

Smith and Miguel Shaw had 13 points for Midway, while Henry and Swift were also in double-figures with 10. Henry and Smith tied for the team lead in assists (four) and Nick Keeton grabbed eight rebounds to lead the 3-5 Eagles.

Midway looks to make in two-in-a-row on Monday, when it travels to northern Indiana to face Goshen (3-7) at 6 p.m.
