MIDWAY, Ky. - A nearly seven-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter doomed the Midway women's basketball team, which lost its final game of 2024 76-64 to Lourdes (Ohio) at Marshall Gymnasium Monday afternoon.
The Eagles crawled their way back from an 11-point deficit in the first half and seemed to take control in a third quarter in which they forced 12 turnovers. And after a 3-pointer by
Atlantis White, Midway held a 51-44 lead with 2:37 remaining in the period.
White had a career-best scoring effort for the third game in a row, leading all players with 21 points.
The Eagles also had 10 of their 17 steals in the third period with
A'Lyrica Hughes finishing the afternoon with seven. That was a new career-best mark for Hughes, who entered the day tied for 10th in the country at 3.6 steals per-game.
After the Gray Wolves battled back, Hughes, who also had 10 points, gave Midway a 57-54 lead with 7:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. But that shot was answered by a Jemaa Nadee 3-pointer, which began a 16-0 run that only ended after a
Jacie Chesser layup with just over a minute to play.
Midway went 0-for-8 with five turnovers in the decisive stretch. The Eagles also struggled from 3-point range, missing their first 10 attempts and going just 4-of-22 for the game.
Jermyra Christian chipped in 12 points while she and White both had four steals.
Trinity Johnson had eight points and her second double-digit rebounding game of the season, leading all players with 10.
Now 6-6 on the season, the Eagles get heavy into River States Conference play with 15 of their final 16 games coming against RSC opponents, starting with a 3 p.m. tipoff against Indiana East Saturday.
