Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer races past Berea for season-opening win

BEREA, Ky. - Midway needed less than two minutes to set the tone for what became a dominant, 4-0 win over Berea in a women's soccer season opener Tuesday.

Just 1 minute, 45 seconds into the game, the Eagles, who've shut out Berea in each of the last three seasons, were already on the board, as a great cross-field pass from Mariana Casey found its way to Evie Clare, who drove home the first goal of the year.

Clare then helped double the lead in the 33rd minute, assisting on a goal by Lyla Khanthachack. Clare also recorded a goal and an assist in Midway's 2023 opener.

Khanthachack, a senior forward with one career goal entering the game, kept things going in the second half, capping her career night by scoring of a Madison Stapleton assist in the 72nd minute.

Midway would then cap off the scoring just under two minutes to play on an unassisted Anna Kneisley goal. The Eagles finished the night with a 19-7 shot advantage.

A veteran defense returning four players who started every game last season did its part to keep the pressure off freshman goalie Ellis Kerns, who made three saves to earn a shutout win in her first collegiate start.

This marks the second-straight year the Eagles have blanked their first opponent after defeating Union (Ky.) 3-0 in last season's opener.

They'll look for a similar result Thursday when the travel to face Union at 7 p.m. The game was originally slated to be played at 4, but was moved back three hours due to concerns about excessive heat.
