BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A vastly improved Union team used a fast, aggressive offensive attack to race past Midway in a 4-1 women's soccer final on Thursday.
Two days removed from a 14-0 win over Alice Lloyd, the most goals scored by any team in an NAIA game this season, the Bulldogs outshot the Eagles 16-8 and had 13 shots on goal to Midway's five.
Despite this, Midway had a great chance to establish control early. Haylee Applegate got a clean look right in front of the net, only to have her shot batted away on a diving save by Union keeper Chiara Isanto.
The Bulldogs responded with a 16th-minute goal by Miranda Cardona before dominating the second half, effectively putting the game away when Alberta Yirenkyi and Shaylynn Bentley scored goals in a 2-minute, 47-second stretch.
Midway avoided a shutout thanks to an Applegate goal of an Anna Waters assist in the 86th minute. It was the first goal of the season for the junior forward, who was a First-Team All-River States Conference player a season ago.
It was a far cry from a matchup between the two teams a season ago, in which the Eagles held a 33-3 shot advantage en route to a 3-0 win in Midway.
The 1-1 Eagles will try to rebound Saturday when they travel to Defiance (Ohio) for a 2 p.m. game.
