MIDWAY, Ky. - After being unable to find the net for 68 minutes despite numerous scoring attempts, Asbury found a four-and-a-half minute window where it seemingly couldn't miss.
The visiting Eagles overcame a 2-0 deficit, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half, winning 3-2 to spoil the Midway women's soccer team's first game on its new on-campus turf field Wednesday.
Facing a team that didn't allow a goal in its first three games, Midway needed less than a minute to get on the board when Evie Clare scored off a Mariana Casey assist.
Clare then helped double the lead in the 28th minute, assisting an Anna Kneisley goal that gave Midway a 2-0 lead it held well into the second half.
But even as it held a multi-goal lead, Midway still struggled to contain the Asbury attack, benefitting from several near misses. That all changed in the 68th minute when an Anna Sparks goal cut the lead to 2-1.
The lead disappeared in the 71st minute when an unassisted Maggie Higdon goal tied the game.
Then, following a yellow card on Midway, Asbury's Hannah Muncie was awarded a penalty kick, which she converted for her team's third score in a 4-minute, 30-second stretch.
The scoring output was the highlight of a dominant second half in which Asbury held a 15-4 shot advantage, dropping Midway to 2-2 on the season.
Wednesday was the first of six-consecutive home games on the Eagles' schedule. They are back home Sunday to face Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m.
