Women's soccer ties Tech in back-and-forth RSC opener

MIDWAY, Ky. - Less than five minutes away from stealing a win in its River States Conference opener, the Midway women's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie following a late West Virginia Tech goal Saturday.

After being held without a shot for over 27 minutes in the second half, the Eagles made the most of their first opportunity, when Anna Kneisley scored off a free kick to give Midway a 2-1 lead.

It was the second free-kick goal Kneisley was associated with Saturday. She earned an assist on the first, as her deflected shot attempt was rebounded and scored by Jameela Shalash.

But the Golden Bears, who tied the score just 1 minute, 41 seconds after the Shalash goal, had another response nearly 10 minutes after Kneisley, as Stheisy Lemus scored unassisted with just 4:48 left to play.

Playing with wet gloves in a persistent rain storm, Eagle keeper Caylee Thompson finished with eight saves, as Midway earned the tie despite being out-shot 14-8.

Now 3-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the RSC, the Eagles return to non-conference action Tuesday, hosting former River States opponent Alice Lloyd at 5 p.m.
