PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Turnovers and miscues would be the difference-maker, as Midway's women's basketball would fall to Shawnee State 72-56 in a River States Conference tilt Sunday.
Midway's offense got off to a slow start, trailing 17-13 after the opening quarter. The Eagles couldn't find their rhythm early, shooting just 33 percent from the field and committing 18 turnovers for the game.
The Eagles' shooting woes continued in the second quarter as they could only muster six points, while Shawnee State's balanced attack kept the game out of reach. Shawnee State capitalized on these miscues, stretching its lead to 33-19 by halftime.
Midway was led by senior guard
Jermyra Christian, who finished the game with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and added eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
Atlantis White also had a solid outing, contributing 11 points, while A'Lyrica Hughes chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.
Kassidy Daugherty had an efficient performance off the bench, scoring 11 points with three made 3-pointers.
Despite the efforts of each of these players, Shawnee would extended its lead significantly in the third quarter, outscoring Midway 23-9.
The Eagles, however, showed resilience in the final frame, putting up 28 points. However, it wasn't enough to make a serious dent in the deficit, as Shawnee State remained firmly in control.
The Eagles will look to bounce back in their next contest as they travel to Beckley, W. Va. on Tuesday, to compete against West Virginia Tech in another RSC match up.
