BECKLEY, W.V. - Midway went on a 17-3 run between the first and second quarters and continued its dominance for the remainder of the game, crushing River States Conference opponent West Virginia Tech 84-57 on the road Tuesday night.
The Eagles overcame a slow start by scoring the final nine points of the first quarter, with back-to-back baskets by
Jacie Chesser and a 3-pointer by
Atlantis White giving them an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After the Golden Bears opened the second-quarter scoring with a 3-pointer, Midway responded with an 8-0 run. And following a
Jermyra Christian 3-point play less than three minutes into the period, Midway's lead would remain in double figures the rest of the game.
The Eagles got the win behind a balanced offensive effort which saw five players score in double figures. Coming off the bench,
Kassidy Daugherty led all scorers with 17 points and three 3-pointers.
A'Lyrica Hughes had another highly efficient and balanced outing, scoring 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while also recording five rebounds, five assists and a game-high four steals. Midway forced 19 turnovers, which resulted in 22 points.
Elsewhere, Christian had 13 points and a game-high six assists, Chesser had 13 points and White added 11.
The Eagles shot 33-of-64 from the field, topping 50 percent for just the second time this season and the first time in conference play. They also shot 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from 3-point range, the second best percentage of the season.
Now 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the RSC, Midway will continue a five-game road swing with a non-conference matchup against Wilberforce (Ohio) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
