TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Midway scored a go-ahead basket with 2:34 to play, and the defense made several key stops late, earning a big 67-65 road win at Saint Mary of the Woods (Ind.) in River States Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
In a game where no one led by more than seven points, the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 49, and would see the lead change four times with three ties in the final 10 minutes.
But 22 seconds after the Pomeroys took a 63-62 lead on a Diamond Bryant layup, the Eagles responded when
Jermyra Christian made a great pass to a cutting
A'Lyrica Hughes, who put the Eagles back ahead by a point with 2:34 to play.
Clinging to a 66-65 lead in the final moments, the Eagles were able to fend off a late attack by the Pomeroy offense. Maddie Fueger made a great move in the paint, but was unable to convert a layup.
Brooklyn Jones then grabbed an offensive rebound and got a clean look, only for her shot to bounce off the back of the rim.
After securing the rebound with two seconds to play,
Kassidy Daugherty closed the game out at both ends. After missing the first of two free throw attempts, she made the second to push the lead to 67-65.
Following a timeout, the Pomeroys had a chance to win it on a last-second Irye Gomez 3-point attempt. But Daugherty, who scored 15 points off the bench, closed out strong and forced Gomez into an erratic attempt that hit off the side of the scoreboard.
Daugherty's senior teammate
Atlantis White continued her career-best season with a game-high 16 points, hitting 4-of-7 attempts from 3-point range.Â
Hughes, who is in the top-10 nationally in steals per-game, added six more to her tally on Saturday, giving her seven games with at least five steals this season.
Jacie Chesser had a team-best six rebounds for Midway, which improved its record to 4-2 in the RSC and 10-8 overall.Â
After playing five straight on the road, the Eagles are at home for their next three, starting with a 7:30 p.m. tip against in-state conference opponent Brescia Thursday.
