MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway made a great comeback attempt, even briefly taking the lead in the fourth quarter, but its efforts were thwarted by Brescia, as the Bearcats earned a 71-69 win in the River States Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week at Marshall Gymnasium Thursday.
Down by 10 at the end of an ugly first half in which they trailed by as many as 13, the Eagles charged back in the third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 23-15 and getting a huge boost of momentum when
Aleah Arlinghaus wrestled away an offensive rebound and made a layup just before the third-quarter buzzer, cutting the deficit to 51-49.
After playing just six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble,
Jermyra Christian scored 13 of her 15 points in the second, with eight coming in the fourth quarter. And after making a steal, Christian made 1-of-2 at the foul line to tie the game at 59.
On the ensuing possession,
A'Lyrica Hughes made a steal and was fouled and after making both of her free throws, put the Eagles ahead for the first time, 61-59.
That lead would hold for 16 seconds. Immediately after, Caroline Lucas made the biggest play of her 23-point night, converting a 3-point play that began a 7-0 run.
Midway didn't go away, getting back within 67-66 following a
Kassidy Daugherty 3-pointer. And though that was answered by Brooklyn Stewart layup, the Eagles still got two chances to tie the game in the final seconds.
Unfortunately, neither was converted. Daugherty's triple attempt bounced off the rim, but was rebounded by
Jacie Chesser, who kicked out too Christian. But after she missed as well, Lucas secured the rebound with 1.8 seconds to play and the Bearcats were able to end things at the foul line.
Chesser had a great night off the bench, scoring a team-high 16 points, going 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the foul line.
Atlantis White chipped in 15 points with
Trinity Johnson grabbing seven rebounds for the 10-9 Eagles. Both teams ended the night with a 4-3 record in conference play.
A difficult challenge awaits on Saturday, as Oakland City comes to Midway with a perfect 7-0 record in RSC play. The game will tip at 3 p.m.
