Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Daugherty comes up clutch as women's basketball hands OCU first conference loss

MIDWAY, Ky. - After whipping her team into a loud frenzy during an electric third-quarter, Kassidy Daugherty was able to thrive in quiet moments as well to lift the Midway women's basketball team to its biggest win of the 2024-25 season.

With her team trailing by a point with 38 seconds left, Daugherty made five-consecutive free throws, and the Eagle defense made critical stops late to hand Oakland City (Ind.) its first River States Conference loss of the season, 71-67 on Saturday.

The Eagles got off to a blistering start, opening up a 10-2 lead following back-to-back 3-pointers by Atlantis White in the first quarter. But the Mighty Oaks rallied, pulling even at 38 at the half and taking their first lead on an Emilee Hope 3-pointer on the first possession of the third period.

But Daugherty, who was held scoreless in the first half, put up 15 points in the third quarter, highlighted by a personal 10-0 run in which she scored on four-consecutive possession to give the Eagles a 59-51 lead.

Oakland City, which came into Saturday having won 20-straight games against RSC opponents not named Rio Grande, didn't go away.

An aggressive Mighty Oak defense forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter, which turned into nine points. And following a Rhylan Kalb free throw off her own steal, OCU was back on top 67-66 with just over a minute to play.

But late into the shot clock, Daugherty was able to get to the rim and draw a shooting foul, making the ensuing foul shots to put Midway back up one.

Daugherty then rebounded a Kalb miss on the other end and made two more at the line after being fouled. The Oaks attempted to pull even on an Ellen Meeringa 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, but she came away empty.

After Trinity Johnson pulled down the last of her game-high 12 rebounds, Midway called a timeout, then proceeded to get the ball back to Daugherty, who went back to the line and scored the last of her 20 points to secure the four-point win.

She wasn't the only bench player to come up huge in the win, as Jacie Chesser had 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

White also had 12 points, with A'Lyrica Hughes recording 11 rebounds and a game-best four assist for 11-9 Midway, which improved to 5-3 in the RSC.

The Eagles hope to have a momentum boost heading into a winnable home game against Indiana Columbus (2-17, 0-8) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
