MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway got off to great starts in both halves, but failed to hold onto the lead, as Campbellsville rode a 31-point effort by Kam Vick to an 87-79 win in a non-conference men's basketball game at Marshall Gymnasium Monday.
The Eagles built up an 18-7 lead early, after a
Will VanHook 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run. The Eagles held a 36-30 lead with under two minutes until the break, only for the Tigers to score the final seven points of the half, taking a one-point lead after Jay Milburn hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
Midway came out hot again in the second half. VanHook, who finished with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, hit consecutive layups to open the half, and following an
Amari Wales 3-pointer, the Eagle advantage was back to 47-41.
Wales and
Nick Keeton led Midway with 17 points with
Decoreio Smith adding 14.
But following a timeout, Vick, who scored 21 points in the second half, hit a 3-pointer and in less than two-and-a-half minutes, the Tigers retook the lead 50-49 on a Milburn layup.
Things stayed competitive for awhile, with Smith tying the game at 61 with 8:32 remaining, only for Campbellsville to put together a 6-0 run and stay on top the rest of the way.
Rebounding proved to be a big advantage for the Tigers, who held a 45-30 edge on the glass.
KEETON JOINS 500 CLUB
In the loss, Keeton became just the second player in Midway basketball history to record 500 career rebounds.
The senior forward, who had 499 career boards coming into the game, reached the milestone mark off a missed free throw with 6:32 to play in the first half.
Only Kwon Evans (962) has more rebounds than Keeton in Midway history.
The Eagles (5-10) return to River States Conference play Thursday, hosting in-state foe Brescia at 5:30 p.m.
