MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway held off multiple Brescia comeback attempts and got balanced production throughout its offense in a 91-81 River States Conference men's basketball win at Marshall Gymnasium Thursday night.
The Eagles took the lead for good on a layup by
Creshaun Brown with 3:45 to play in the first half, a shot that started an 8-0 run that gave Midway a 39-32 halftime lead.
Brescia would get within one possession on 14 separate occasions in the second half without ever taking the lead or forcing a tie. The last time brought the half to its tightest score, as a Gonzalo Luque 3-pointer made it 71-70 with 4:13 to play.
But on the ensuing possession,
Miguel Shaw hit a jump shot that was immediately followed by four-straight points by Brown, as the Eagles held a 20-11 scoring advantage the rest of the way.
Brow had his second 20-point effort in four games, as he and
Amari Wales led the team with 20 points.
Travontae Swift added 13 with
Robbie Henry and Shaw both scoring 11.
By contrast, the Bearcats got a 33-point effort from Damian Garcia, the NAIA's third-leading scorer entering the night, but had just one other double-digit scorer in Luque (17 points).
Midway also owned the glass in the second half, out-rebounding the Bearcats 25-13.
Will VanHook led all players with 11 rebounds. Henry added 10 for a double-double on the night, with Wales missing out by just a single rebound.
Both teams are 3-4 in the RSC with the Eagles improving to 6-10 overall. Midway has a great chance to move up the standings further, as its next two games are at home against Oakland City and Indiana Columbus, who are a combined 2-12 in conference play.
The Eagles and Oakland City square off at 1 p.m. Saturday.
