MIDWAY, Ky. - Amari Wales connected on a go-ahead 3-point play with 1:37 remaining and the Midway defense closed out its best performance of the season, earning the Eagle men's basketball team its first River States Conference win, 74-69 over visiting Indiana University East on Saturday afternoon.
In a game that saw 13 ties and 13 lead changes, the Red Wolves pulled ahead 69-67 on a Jake Johnson jump shot with 2:05 to play.Â
But on the ensuing possession, Wales scored the most critical of his team-high 21 points, driving to the lane with the shot clock winding down and making a layup through the contact of defender Trent Johnson. Wales hit the ensuing free throw to give Midway the lead for good.
The defense and senior forward
Nick Keeton then put the game away. After a stop, Keeton grabbed an offensive rebound on the other end and after being fouled, made two free throws to make it 72-69 Midway.
The Eagles then forced a turnover and took over with four seconds to play. After a foul, Wales missed the front-end of a 1-and-1, only for Keeton to grab the last of his team high seven rebounds. After being fouled, he made two more free throws, finishing with 19 points and going 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Entering the day having allowing the second most points per-game in the NAIA, the Eagles gave up a season-low against a Red Wolf team that came in ranked in the top-30 nationally in scoring offense at 85.7 points per-game.
Midway, which started the afternoon 28th nationally in scoring (85.9), got 96 percent of its scoring from four players.
Robbie Henry added 18 with
Decoreio Smith finishing with 13.
Henry also had four assists, one behind
