VERSAILLES, Ky. - Midway took first place in all but one event to earn two dominant wins in its season opener Saturday.
The Eagles, who had the top-two finishers in seven events, defeated Pikeville 158-35 and West Virginia Tech 167-7.
Josie Briner, a national qualifier in each of her first two college seasons, began her junior year with a pair of wins, including a new school-record swim of 4:52.39 in the 200-yard individual medley. She also came in first in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 57.41.
Briner also opened and closed the day with relay wins. She won the 400 medley with
Kaelynn Martin,
Amber Klose and
Pamela Ramires in 4:18.13, then won with Martin, Klose and
Elizabeth Dolberry in 1:46.67 in the 200 free.
Klose won two individual events as well, as did freshmen

Klose won the 50 free in 27.17 seconds and the 200 breaststroke in 2:46.03. In their first college meets, Eastman won the 200 free in 2:08.06 and the 500 free in 5:46.66, while Hebert won the 200 backstroke in 2:25.75 and the 100 butterfly in 1:10.22.
Other winners were Ramires in the 1,000 free (11:50.85) and Martin in the 100 back (1:03.30).
Individual runners-up were Dolberry in the 200 free (2:19.60) and 200 back (2:30.37),
Addisyn McCann in the 100 breast (1:21.16), Martin in the 500 free (5:54.29, Ramires in the 100 fly (1:15.62). The Eagles were also second in both relays.
Midway returns to the pool in just three days, traveling to Danville, Ky. to face Centre on Tuesday.
