ELKHART, Ind. - For the third year in a row,
Josie Briner reached the finals of the 200-yard butterfly at the NAIA Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships, with the Midway junior having the best performance of her career.
Briner broke her own event program record in the preliminary round, then beat it again in the finals, ultimately ending up in 11th place. The only Eagle to ever reach the finals at nationals, Briner finished 13th in each of the last two seasons.
Having previously topped out at 2:09.46 in the 200 fly, she finished 12th with a swim of 2:08.60 in Saturday's prelims.
She did even better in the finals, where she touched the wall in 2:08.05, finishing third in the 'B' final group and 11th overall. Her final time was also better than two qualifiers from the 'A' group.
The Manchester, Ind. native just barely missed making the finals in the 100 free as well. In a prelim where the top-16 reach the finals, Briner placed 17th in 58.21, just .05 seconds behind Marta Sinsabaugh of Indiana Wesleyan for the final spot.
She also competed in the 500 freestyle prelims, finishing 31st in 5:25.59.
Briner was joined in the 100 fly prelims by teammates
Sydney Eastman and
Kaelynn Martin, who were both making their national debuts. Eastman finished 23rd in 58.57, with Martin placing 36th in 1:00.38.
Eastman, a freshman, actually swam the same three events as Briner, finishing 25th in the 200 fly (2:13.77) and 36th in the 500 free (5:28.60).
Martin, a sophomore, swam in two backstroke races. She finished 23rd in 2:10.69 in the 200 and 26th in 1:00.22 in the 100.
This concludes a 2025-26 season that saw five Eagle swimmers hit national cuts with 13 program records being broken.
