Men's soccer ties Brescia as late shot bounces off post

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Though it was able to salvage a 1-1 tie against Brescia on Thursday, there was still a bit of heartache for the Midway men's soccer team in the River States Conference matchup.

After playing to scoreless tie at halftime, the two teams traded goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Lucas Santos put the Bearcats ahead 1-0 before Brayden Gillman tied the score for Midway off a George Spencer assist.

The Eagles, who've had two losses and one tie on goals in the final four minutes this season, looked like they were going to steal a late game win in the 87th minute.

Saleh Ekuchi made a great move to get free from a defender and fired a shot past the outstretched arms of Brescia goalie Pau Gelabert. But unfortunately, the ball sailed into the right post and though it moved backwards slightly, it never entered the goal and eventually drifted out of play.

Midway's Landon Sorrell had a strong game in goal with 10 saves, his most in a Midway uniform.

Now 3-8-2 with a 1-3-1 mark in the RSC, the Eagles have a tough game on Saturday, traveling to face Rio Grande (5-4-3, 3-1) at 6:30 p.m.

The Red Storm are currently just outside the NAIA top-25, with their 65 vote points just two less than No. 25 Ottawa (Kan.) in the most recent poll.
