Midway Men's Soccer battles 'receiving votes' Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Midway men's soccer team returned to action on Saturday (Oct. 18) when they traveled to the 'Buckeye State' for a River States Conference matchup with Rio Grande (Ohio) at Evan E. Davis Field.

The Eagles put up a valiant effort against the RedStorm, who are currently in the 'receiving votes' portion of the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll, but ultimately came up short, suffering a 2-0 defeat.

Hugo Ferrira netted the first goal for the RedStorm (6-4-3, 4-1 RSC) in the 18th minute, while Tommy Munoz Salazar scored the second goal in the 33rd minute.

Despite taking the loss, Landon Sorrell had a solid game in goal for the Eagles. The Monroe, Louisiana native faced eight shots and made six saves.

As a team the Eagles had six shots including three shots on goal. Tomas Sarmiento, Rhys Dickson, and Brayden Gillman accounted for Midway's three shots on goal.

Midway, who drops to 3-9-2 overall and 1-4-1 in RSC play, is back in action on Wednesday when they step out of league play for a non-conference matchup with Asbury (Ky.), a former RSC foe who joined the NCAA Division II ranks. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET in Wilmore.
