MIDWAY, Ky. - An inability to close out sets cost the Midway women's volleyball team a winnable match, as the Eagles fell 25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 25-14 to West Virginia Tech in River States Conference action Friday.
The Eagles led for 92 percent of the first two sets but were unable to win either, as both played out in a similar fashion.
Midway scored the first five points of the opening set and held a comfortable 19-13 lead on a
Kayedon Mattingly kill. The Golden Bears proceeded to score the next four points but the Eagles initially weathered the storm, as another Mattingly kill made it 23-19.
But the Eagles would proceed to commit five consecutive errors before Anais Gonzalez ended the set with a service ace.
Set two was more of the same with Midway jumping out to a 6-1 lead and pulling ahead 17-10 before surrendering six consecutive points.
The teams proceeded to trade the next nine points before Midway went up 23-20 following consecutive kills by
Zoie Hays and
Alyssa Medeiros.
But once again, the Eagles faltered, committing four straight errors. They pulled even at 24 on another Mederios kill, only to surrender consecutive kills to Addison White and Aniston Treadway to give the Bears a two-set advantage.
Set three appeared to be following a similar script, as the Eagles saw a 17-13 lead turn into a 23-21 deficit, but this time it would be West Virginia Tech that would stumble. Following a
Makayla Boothe kill to make it 23-22, the Golden Bears made three straight errors to help Midway pull within a set.
That would be where the comeback ended, as Midway never led in a fourth set where the Golden Bears scored seven of the first eight points.
The Eagles finished the night with the advantage in kills (43-41), hitting percentage (.129-.108) and assists (42-38).
Medeiros and
Paige Miles both recorded double-doubles. Medeiros finished with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Miles had 16 assists and 10 digs.
Lindsey Whitehouse led all players with 22 assists with Hays and Mattingly adding nine kills apiece.
The Eagles fall to 1-10 on the year and 0-11 in the RSC. They are back home at 1 p.m. tomorrow to take on Rio Grande.
