MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway opened the women's basketball season with perhaps the greatest scoring performance in program history, as the Eagles crushed an overwhelmed Miami Middletown 134-58 Monday night.
Available statistics only go back to 2005, but Monday's game was by far the biggest scoring output in that time, eclipsing the previous mark of 123, set against Ecclesia College (Ark) on Nov. 22, 2019.
The rout started right away, as the Eagles' full-court pressure forced 12 Thunder Hawk turnovers in the first quarter, as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
The offense wouldn't let up, shooting 58 percent for the game while hitting 14-of-26 3-point attempts. The end result was the 17th 100-point performance since 2005 and the second under third-year head coach
Kylee Gorby-Steward.
Of the 18 players to see minutes, 16 scored, none more than
Alexys Moore, who recorded all 16 of her points in just 10 minutes of play in the first half.
Moore was one of six Eagles to score in double figures and one of three to average more than a point a minute. Paige Medely went 5-of-6 from 3-point range to score 15 points in 13 minutes, while Jermyra Chrsitian added 14 in 12.
Fellow freshman
Alexis Taylor added 12 points,
Maddie Nipper had 11 and
Annabelle Babb had 10.
Taylor also tied
Lauren Walton for the team lead with eight rebounds as the Eagles held a whopping 69-25 rebounding advantage. Midway had more offensive rebounds (27) than Miami Middletown had as a team, with Taylor grabbing six of them.
Midway also had 32 assists to the Thunder Hawks' nine.
A'Lyrica Hughes had six to go along with four steals, while
Aleah Arlinghaus had five assists in just eight minutes.
Competition will likely be tougher for the Eagles this weekend, as they travel to Owensboro for the Kentucky Bluegrass Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The Friday game at Brescia University will be against Tennessee Southern at 3 p.m.
