OWENSBORO, Ky. - Fresh off perhaps
the greatest offensive performance in program history, the Midway women's basketball team was unable to duplicate that success in a 71-59 loss to Tennessee Southern on the first day of the Kentucky Bluegrass Classic Friday.
After a 134-point effort against Miami Middletown on Tuesday, the Eagles seemingly picked up right where they left off as
Alexys Moore hit a 3-pointer on the game's opening possession. But that was followed by 13 consecutive misses, as the Eagles were just 2-of-19 from the field in the opening quarter.
Despite a field goal percentage that stayed under 20 percent well into the third quarter, Midway was able to keep things close thanks to a defense that forced 30 turnovers. And when
Paige Medley made a layup with 1:13 left in the third quarter, the score was just 47-42.
But the Firehawks would score four points to close the quarter, then had the first four points of the fourth, as Midway was held scoreless for nearly three minutes to open the period.
For the second straight game, Moore and Medley led the scoring charge, Moore finishing with 16 points, Medley 11.
Moore also had a team-best four steals while
A'Lyrica Hughes pulled down 12 rebounds for 1-1 Midway.
The Eagles conclude the Bluegrass Classic against another Tennessee opponent on Saturday, taking on Bryan at 6 p.m.
