OWENSBORO, Ky. - A great fourth quarter sent Midway home with a split at the Bluegrass Women's Basketball Classic, as the Eagles defeated Bryan (Tenn.) on Saturday night.
The Eagles, who shot just 22 percent from the field
in a 71-59 loss to Tennessee Southern on Friday, couldn't get much going offensively through three quarters, making just 17-of-72 field goal tries.
They did however get a nice jolt from
Morgan Cross just before the fourth quarter. Off a defensive rebound, Cross converted a 3-point play on the other end to give the Eagles a 40-39 lead, then made it a three-point game with a jumper just before the buzzer.
Cross, who had 12 points off the bench, would then score the first basket of the fourth quarter before the Eagle defense clamped down, allowing just two points in the first 5:03 of the period, which allowed the lead to expand to 53-41.
After forcing 30 turnovers on Friday, the Eagles turned the Lions over 22 times.
A'Lyrica Hughes had four of Midway's 10 steals to go along with a 13-point, 11 rebound double-double. Backcourt mate
Jermyra Christian had a team-best 14 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double while also dishing out six assists.
Freshman
Alexys Moore added her third-straight double-digit scoring effort with 11 points for 2-1 Midway, which is back home to face Bluefield (Va.) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
