MIDWAY, Ky. - Balanced offense and a swarming defense led Midway women's basketball to a second-consecutive home rout to open the season, as the Eagles defeated Bluefield (Va.) 98-49 at Marshall Gymnasium Wednesday.
Entering the night having forced a River States Conference-best 25 turnovers per-game, Midway took the ball away from the Rams a whopping 37 times on Wednesday, which led to 42 points.
The catalyst on the defensive end was
Jermyra Christian, who had six of Midway's 25 steals. Christian also led all players with seven assists and led the Eagles with six rebounds.
As was the case in a record-setting,
134-58 rout of Miami Middletown (Ohio) to open the season, the Eagles got points from 16 different players.
Most impressive on Wednesday is that just two players finished in double figures.
Maddie Nipper came off the bench to score 14 of the 70 points scored by the Eagles' second unit.
Alexys Moore added 13 points. Moore, a freshman, has scored in double figures in each of her first four collegiate games.
Now 3-1 on the season, the Eagles, who are averaging 116 points per-game at home, are off for 10 days before traveling to Alice Lloyd for a 1 p.m. game on Nov. 15.
