KOKOMO, Ind. -- After having nearly a week off from competition, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to action on Friday (Oct. 3) when faced one of their toughest matchups of the season against IU Kokomo (Ind.), who is currently ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.
The Cougars (15-5, 6-0 RSC), who have won 10 straight matches and have dropped just one set in their six River States Conference matches, continued their dominant run on Friday, sweeping the Eagles 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-18).
The opening two sets saw the Eagles (1-13, 0-6 RSC) hit .000 and -.115, respectively, but they found momentum in the third frame where they posted a .231 attacking clip.
Midway faced a 13-7 deficit in the set but seemed to find some rhythm following a kill by
Emma Lesher and an ace by
Lindsey Whitehouse. They got within one following a pair of kills by
Ava Benner and another by
Kayedon Mattingly, but IU Kokomo used a 6-0 run to win the set and complete the 3-0 sweep.
Alyssa Medeiros and Benner led the offensive attack with four kills apiece, while
Josie Kissell added three kills. Whitehouse chipped in 11 assists and seven digs, while
Blair Riney led the defensive effort with eight digs.
Midway is set to return to action on Wednesday, October 8, when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to take on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).
