MIDWAY, Ky. - A late-season surge has secured Midway a third-consecutive berth in the River States Conference tournament, with the Eagles clinching via a dominant 4-1 win over Shawnee State Thursday night.
Now with 10 points, the 3-4-1 Eagles are locked into one of the tournament's top-six spots after Brescia (2-4-2) and Indiana Columbus (2-5) both lost on Thursday night.
The Midway offense got four goals from four different players, the first from
Brayden Gillman on a diving header off a
Juan Caballero pass in the 17th minute.
After the Bears got an equalizer on a corner kick,
Tomas Sarmiento gave Midway a 2-1 halftime lead with a 35th-minute goal.
George Spencer and
Brian Alvor then added scores in the 65th and 83rd minutes respectively to turn a tight game into a rout.
The decisive score came despite the Eagles holding a tight 13-11 advantage in shots, as keeper
Landon Sorrell was a near brick wall on the back end, recording seven saves.
Midway, which was in ninth place in the conference prior
to a 2-1 win over IU Columbus on Saturday, is now within one point of 3-4-2 Shawnee State for the fifth spot.Â
And with a win over an Indiana East team that is just 1-7 in RSC games on Saturday, the Eagles will leapfrog the Bears, who have concluded regular season play.
Saturday's game, which will come after a senior day ceremony, is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
