MIDWAY, Ky. - Caught in a very tight battle for one of the final spots in the River States Conference Tournament, the Midway men's soccer team kept hope alive with a critical 2-1 win over Indiana Columbus on Saturday.
After
Ben Banton came through with a game-winning goal
to secure a 2-1 win at Asbury on Wednesday, it was Lucas Perotte's turn to play hero on Saturday, as his 54th-minute goal off a
George Spencer assist broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the only scoring in the second half.
The Eagles fell behind 9:29 into the game and were held off the scoreboard for over 40 minutes before a
Rhys Dickson goal off a split assist by
Juan Caballero and
Elijah Orren gave them a jolt before the half.
Midway got solid goal play for the second game in a row, this time from
Landon Sorrell, who finished with five saves and he and the defense closed the game with over 80 minutes of shutout ball.
Needing to get into the top-six to make the RSC Tournament, the Eagles, who are 2-4-2 in conference games, leapfrogged IUC (2-5) into seventh place.
The Eagles are still narrowly behind Brescia (2-4-2) and Shawnee State (3-3-2) with two games remaining.
They can gain even further ground on Thursday, when Shanwee State comes to Midway for a 7:30 p.m. match.
