MIDWAY, Ky. - Down multiple key players, the Midway women's soccer team gutted out a comeback victory, clinching a 3-2 win over Shawnee State on a late penalty kick goal Thursday night.
With the score tied and just under 10 minutes to play, the Eagles received a foul call inside the goalie box, setting
Sloane Pollock up for a PK try.
The freshman, who was 2-for-2 on such opportunities this season, made it 3-for-3, getting a shot past diving Bear keeper Brooklyn Hawes.
Pollock, who now has a team-high nine goals, wasn't the only freshman to come up clutch, as keeper
Lilly Riordan made a diving stop to deny Shawnee's Izzy Riddle on a 1-on-1 breakaway with seven minutes remaining. Riordon finished with seven saves
Midway's other two goals came from
Haylee Applegate, who scored on a
Chloe Kemper assist 1:43 into the game, then tied the score 19 minutes into the second half when she sailed a shot over the head of Hawes from nearly 30 yards out.
In her second-to-last collegiate game, Applegate recorded her 29th and 30th career goals at Midway as well as her 11th multi-goal game.
Midway improves to 5-9-1 overall and 3-6 in the River States Conference.
The Eagles will conclude the season at home against Indiana East at 5 p.m. Saturday, with a senior day celebration prior to the game.
