MIDWAY, Ky. - Alyssa Medeiros had the most kills by a Midway player in a match this season, but it wasn't enough to get the Eagles a win, as they dropped a 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 final to in-state opponent Spalding Tuesday night.
The Eagles had the advantage in kills (11-8) and hitting percentage (.133 to .038) in the opening set, but still came out on the wrong end, thanks in part to five service errors, as a bad set and two attack errors allowed the Golden Eagles to score the final three points after the set had tied at 22.
Midway showed great resilience in set two, tying the score 10 times before finally taking its first lead 20-19 on a Spalding attack error.
Perhaps the play of the night came with the score tied at 23. With a Golden Eagle attack looking primed to land in the middle of the floor,
Kayedon Mattingly used every inch of her 6-foot-3 frame to lunge back and kick the ball into play, eventually setting up a Medeiros kill.
Up 24-23, the Eagles got another Medeiros kill, one of the 19 she had on the night, to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set proved highly competitive too, with Midway making a 7-2 run after Spalding had taken a 21-15 lead. A Medeiros kill and Golden Eagle attack error eventually cut the deficit to 23-22.
But that would be where the momentum stopped, as an Eagle attack error gave way to a Brooks Watson clinching ace.
The Eagles kept things close for awhile in set four, but the Golden Eagles eventually pulled away to drop Midway to 1-22.
Ava Benner also had double-digit kills, finishing with 13. Setting the attackers up was the 22 assists of
Makenna Depue.
Defensivley,
Aubry Kamholz added 10 digs and Mattingly had five blocks for Midway, which concludes the regular season with two River States Conference matches this weekend.
The first will be the home finale against Kentucky Christian at 7 p.m. Friday.
