NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- The Midway men's wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday (Dec. 6) for the first time in nearly a month when they competed in the Indiana Little States hosted by Manchester University (Ind.).
The Eagles had multiple wrestlers pick up at least one win and were led by
Sebastian Hutchinson who placed eighth in the 184-pound weight class.
The junior from Brunswick, Ga. opened his tournament with a first period pin before getting sent to the consolation bracket with an 8-3 loss. He then picked up a 16-4 major decision before suffering back-to-back losses, settling for eighth place.
In the heavyweight division,
Anthony Popi posted a 3-2 record. He won in a tech fall in his first match before being sent to the consolation bracket. The freshman then extended his run after securing a 13-4 major decision and an 8-4 decision. His run unfortunately came to an end after suffering a 5-3 decision loss to Michael Yerian of Marian (Ind.).
Alex Velazquez opened his tournament with a 20-5 tech fall and an 18-15 decision to advance to the quarterfinals, but his run came to an end after suffering back-to-back losses.
Picking up one victory apiece for the Blue and Gold was
Nolan Jones at 149,
Michael Colligan at 174, and
Kenneth Henson at heavyweight.
Midway is scheduled to return to action on Monday, December 15, when they take on Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference dual in Columbia.
