NEW ALBANY, Ind. - A 35-point effort by
Amari Wales and a late comeback attempt weren't enough, as Midway's men's basketball team saw a three-game win streak end with a 98-93 road loss to River States Conference foe Indiana Southeast Saturday.
Miguel Shaw added 21 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range, his last make coming 4:53 into the second half to tie the game at 58.
That shot, however, was countered by a 13-2 Grenadier run, one that saw their lead balloon to 71-60 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Midway would get as close as five, thanks largely to the efforts of Wales, who scored 19 of his 35 in the last 9:05. He shot 10-of-15 from the field and 14-of-15 from the foul line.
Wales tied his career-high scoring output, set previously
in a season-opening win over Cincinnati-Clermont. It ties for the fourth-highest scoring total in Midway men's basketball history, with
Nick Keeton and Kwon Evans also hitting the 35-point mark during the 2021-22 season.
But a defense, which allowed just over 67 points per-game during the three game win streak, struggled to contain IUS, which shot nearly 60 percent from the field (34-of-58).
Both teams are now 5-5 in the RSC with the Eagles dropping to 8-11 overall. Midway has another tough road game ahead, traveling to Ohio to take on Rio Grande (16-6, 7-3) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
