Rio overcomes Midway's fast start as men's basketball drops conference tilt

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Short handed Midway was unable to maintain the positive momentum of a fast start, as Rio Grande went on a 13-2 second-half run to pull away for an 84-68 win in River States Conference men's basketball play Tuesday night.

The Eagles, who are now 0-10 all time against the Red Storm, came out on fire, scoring the game's first nine points and leading by as much as 14-3 following a Decoreio Smith 3-pointer.

The Red Storm pulled within 36-35 at the half and took their first lead 38-36 on an Eric Butler layup a minute into the first half.

The teams battled back and forth before an Eythan House 3-pointer with 6:57 to go kicked off the decisive run, as Rio led by double-figures for the final 6:02.

The Red Storm shot 59.3 percent from the field in the second half while holding Midway to 32.5

Struggles to carry quick starts into the second half have been an issue for the Eagles, who have now dropped five games in which they held double-digit leads.

Creshaun Brown continued his recent string of strong offensive play, leading Midway with 18 points while making four 3-pointers. Smith and Miguel Shaw both scored 15 while Will VanHook had nine rebounds and four assists for the 8-12 Eagles, who fell to 5-6 in the RSC.

Midway will attempt to get back into the win column Saturday when it hosts Indiana Kokomo at 1 p.m.
