SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Two long-time standouts added to their Midway legacies on Saturday, as the Eagle women's indoor track and field team took part in the Wittenberg Steemer Collegiate Showcase.
Pole vaulter
Nevaeh Brown earned her second win of the season while
Trinity Smith broke a program record in the 5,000-meter run that was set before the turn of the millennium.
Brown topped out at 3.70 meters on Saturday, comfortably defeating the 3.55 hit by Meredith Goecke from NCAA Division-I Wright State (Ohio). This marks the third time this season Brown has reached at least 3.70 meters, the NAIA National Qualifying 'A' standard.
She was one of two Eagles to finish in the top-five in the event, with
Emerson VanScoy placing fourth at 3.35.
Smith, who finished 11th in the 5,000, crossed the finish line in 18:48.21. That easily eclipsed the more than 25-year old record of 20:30.92, set by Catherine Houston in 1999.
This is the third indoor distance record broken by Smith, who has Midway's best times in the one-mile and 3,000-meter races as well.
Also placing for Midway was
Nadia Meeks, who finished sixth in 9.58 seconds in the 60 hurdles.
This concludes the indoor regular season for the Eagles, who get two weeks off before traveling to Marietta, Ohio for the River States Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 14-15.
