MARIETTA, Ohio - Wins by national qualifiers
Emerson VanScoy and
Maddi Reed on day two of the River States Conference Indoor Women's Track and Field Championships helped Midway get within a single point of a top-three finish.
The Eagles,
who were in third after Friday's opening day, dropped one spot in the final standings with 108 points, one less than the 109 earned by Brescia. Rio Grande took first with 178 while Indiana Kokomo was second with 126.
The highlight of the day came from VanScoy, who not only defeated Brescia's Jordyn Cardwell on a tie-breaker for the conference title, but also hit the NAIA National Qualifying 'B' Standard in the process.
This is the first national mark hit by VanScoy, who will join pole vaulters Reed and
Nevaeh Brown at the NAIA Indoor National Championship, which run from Feb. 27 to March 1 in Gainesville, Fla.
Reed, who finished second to Brown in pole vault Friday, left the weekend a four-time all-conference member and a champion in the 55-meter hurdles. The freshman standout finished the race in a meet record 9.02 seconds.
She also finished fourth in the high jump at 1.47 meters and fifth in the 4x400 relay, teaming with Brown,
Emilee Cecil and
Kashlynn Rice for a fifth-place run of 4:25.03.
All told, Midway was all-conference in 19 events, 12 of them being held Saturday.
Cecil added a pair of individual honors with a third-place run of 26.72 in the 200 and fourth-place finish of 7.53 in the 55-meter dash.
Trinity Gottler claimed a second All-RSC throwing nod, finishing third at 14.20 meters in the weight throw.
Trinity Smith nabbed all-conference distance honors for the second day in a row, taking fourth in an 11:06.04 finish in the 3,000.
Others to land in the top-eight were
Stevie McSorley in the 800 (sixth, 2:34.10) and one-mile (eighth, 5:49.79),
Macy Adams in the 1,000 (eighth, 3:28.02) and Rice in the 55 hurdles (eighth, 9.57).
Ariah Egleston was named the Eagles' Champion of Character.
