MARIETA, Ohio - Four days after
earning the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, the Midway women's pole vault team more than lived up to its reputation at the River States Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Emerson VanScoy and
Makayla Brooks both broke a meet record, while
Maddi Reed also hit a national qualifying 'A' standard, as the trio finished 1-2-3 in the event Saturday, the second and final day of competition.Â
The Eagles finished sixth overall in the final standings with 64 points. Indiana East won with 174, narrowly edging the 166 of runner-up Rio Grande.
This marked the sixth year in a row Midway won an indoor conference championship in pole vault, the previous five going to
Nevaeh Brown.
On Saturday, VanScoy and Brooks both topped out at 3.75 meters, eclipsing the previous meet record of 3.70,
set by Brown last season. VanScoy,
who was also first in high jump and second in long jump on Friday, earned first place after clearing on two jumps, while Brooks needed three.
Both eclipsed the NAIA 'A' standard of 3.65 meters. VanScoy
previously cleared the mark last Saturday, while Brooks,
an outdoor 'B' qualifier in 2023, hit her first ever 'A' standard.
Also hitting the mark on Saturday was Reed, who was third at 3.65.
Reed was an 'A' qualifier in both indoor and outdoor a season ago. She was second to Brown at the 2025 Indoor Championships,
then took first at the Outdoor Championships in April.
Midway placed in three other events, with
Emilee Cecil being a part of all of them.
Cecil earned an all-conference, third-place mark of 7.53 seconds in the 55-meter dash while also placing fifth in 27.40 in the 200.
In the 4x400 relay, Cecil,
Stevie McSorley,
Kashlynn Rice and
Cate Coppola were sixth in 4:27.16
The NAIA Indoor National Championships will be in Gainesville, Fla. on March 5-7. VanScoy, Brooks and Reed will all compete in pole vault with VanScoy also qualifying in high jump.
