RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Four wins and a national qualifying performance by
Maddi Reed have the Midway women on top of the leaderboard halfway through the River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Eagles closed Friday's opening day with 62 points, six more than Shawnee State and seven-and-a-half more than Rio Grande, who are in second and third respectively.
The effort was driven in field events, where Reed,
Emerson VanScoy and
Trinity Gottler combined for four wins. And after VanScoy and Gottler already secured national qualifying berths during the regular season, they were joined by Reed, who claimed her spot in pole vault Friday.
Having already secured a conference title, Reed missed her first two tries at 3.66 meters, which would have qualified her for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships.
But on her final attempt of the afternoon, the freshman standout got enough momentum to get over the bar, clinching a return trip to nationals after she'd qualified in the same event during indoor season.
All told, 20 of Midway's points came in pole vault, as VanScoy and
Makayla Brooks finished third and fifth respectively. VanScoy topped out a 3.30 meters with Brooks hitting 2.87.
That would hardly be the highlight for VanScoy, who continued her excellent season with wins in high jump and long jump. She jumped 5.23 meters in long jump and 1.60 in high jump.
Reed scored in long jump as well, placing seventh at 4.74.
Gottler was all-conference in two events, highlighted by a winning, 37.23-meter toss in javelin. She was also third in hammer throw at 44.91 meters.
On the track side, the 4x800 relay team of Stevie MsSorely,
Trinity Smith,
Macy Adams and
Abby Baldridge was fifth in a time of 10:07.69.
Midway will look to keep its lead on day two, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
